That one looks like a mermaid! There's a tractor! Ooh, over there I see a goat jumping over a swimming pool!
I wanted to bring that element of "What do you see?" creativity into our crafting idea.
When it comes to crafting with my kids, my absolute favorites are the ones that are open-ended!
The ones that allow them to make their own creative decisions and let each of their little personalities shine through.
Imaginative crafts are so much more fun than ones that end with everyone's project looking exactly the same!

Creative Paper Plate Hat Crafts for Kids
To make your own creative paper plate hat crafts, you will need:
- white paper plates (non-waxy ones will work best for coloring purposes)
- scissors
- pencil for tracing
- crayons or markers
- string or ribbon for tying on the hats
Prepare Your DIY Paper Plate Hat Crafts
I decided to make three different shaped hats for my kids to choose from: circles, triangles, and squares.
First, I drew the shape on the plate and cut it out.
Older kids can do their own cutting, of course.
Or littler ones can give the scissors a whirl if they are up for the challenge!
You may just want to get the cutting started for them.
Paper plates aren't just for hat crafts: here are more hands on activities you can do with paper plates!
You can use the first one as a tracing template to make additional hats of the same shape.
This will be easier than starting from scratch when your kids decide they want to make hats for their dolls and daddy and the dog, too.
Help Spark Your Child's Imagination to Plan Their Party Hats
Next, place the paper plates in front of the kids.
It is brainstorming time!
What do the shapes remind them of?
What is shaped like a triangle?
My five-year old decided to turn his triangle into pizza!
Brainstorm as many ideas for their paper plate hat crafts as possible.
This is stimulating their creativity even if they choose to go a different route for their final hat!
If you want to, walk around the house and find things that match the shapes.
Start to Create Your Unique Paper Plate Hat Crafts
Once your kids have decided what to turn their paper plate into, they can begin coloring and decorating their hat crafts.
My seven-year old daughter is hopelessly into rainbows, so naturally she turned her hat into a rainbow bullseye of sorts.
My two-year old, of course, doesn't quite yet understand how to draw specific things, and that's totally fine.
He loved coloring his hat right along with big brother and big sister.
The final craft step is to fold up the cut out shape part of the paper plate to make it a hat!
Optionally you can also add a tie so your paper plate hat won't fall off!
We used a hole punch and ribbon to add our ties.
My son wanted to make a circle one too, so we also ended up with an eyeball!
And he also made a rectangle one into a can of poop. I'll spare you a photo.
My daughter's circle-turned-donut hat was adorable!
Voila!
